History

The Trail Maple Leaf Band is an important feature of the Performing Arts in Trail and the neighbouring communities.  It is part of the exciting history of the West Kootenay region, a history that has brought people from many corners of the world to build the railways and dams and work the mines and smelter.  Italian immigrants arrived in our valley in the early 1900s and brought with them a love of music.  From this came the beginnings of the Maple Leaf Band in 1917.  The group has endured and grown to include men and women, students and seniors, with a wide variety of backgrounds.  The band gives a place for high school students to gain experience outside of their band program and for community members to continue their recreational enjoyment of music.

Members

The 35 to 40 members of the Trail Maple Leaf Band come from a 40 km radius helping to pull together the villages and towns of Fruitvale/Montrose, Warfield, Rossland, Castlegar and Trail.  We have performed at concerts, parades and other civic functions in these communities.  As an organization, we hold an Annual General Meeting in December to elect officers.  There is also the occasional social get-together and an annual Family Day picnic in June.

Practices are held in the MacIntyre Room, Cominco Arena, Downtown Trail, every Monday at 7:00 pm, September to June.  New members are always welcome.

Music

We began as a marching band and a large part of our music repertoire continues to be marches.  But these days we seldom march and so many of our pieces are now for concerts. The charts are often medleys from well known shows and movies.  Our director also composes and arranges pieces for our band.
